Falling Creek Middle

Summary:

Falling Creek Middle is a public middle school in Richmond, Virginia, serving 1,419 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Chesterfield County Public Schools district, which is ranked 82 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Falling Creek Middle faces significant challenges, including a student population that is predominantly Hispanic (54.12%) and a high percentage of students from low-income families (80.06% to 90.74% receive free or reduced-price lunch). The school consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Virginia middle schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger, and its performance on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests is significantly lower than the Chesterfield County and Virginia averages across multiple subjects and grade levels. This may be due in part to the school's lower spending per student ($6,497 in 2020-2021) and higher student-teacher ratio (14.1 to 16.3) compared to nearby schools like Salem Church Middle, Providence Middle, and Manchester Middle.

The challenges faced by Falling Creek Middle highlight the importance of addressing the unique needs of diverse student populations and ensuring equitable funding and resource allocation to support schools serving disadvantaged communities. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive and targeted approach, including interventions to support the school's students, increased funding and resources, and a focus on improving teaching and learning outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is a gladiator arena. They claim fights are down 30 percent. Students attack other students and are talked to but not disciplined. My daughter attends. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
