Charlottesville High has seen a decline in its academic performance, with its statewide ranking dropping from 140th out of 327 Virginia high schools in 2018-2019 to 255th out of 329 in 2023-2024. Additionally, the Community Lab School, a public charter high school within the Albemarle County Public Schools district, stands out as a high-performing school in the area, providing a contrast to the academic challenges faced by Charlottesville High.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I worked at CHS and the students in General Education classes were extremely disrespectful and would talk over you. No consequences. The AP kids would have their parents complain to the school and grades would be changed. I've been to several schools (County Wide Teacher of the Year) and have no complaints from them. Close Quote

Open Quote My child has had superb experience at CHS (he is an 11th grader). I highly recommend this school. My child is a minority student and he has excelled through the many opportunities provided at CHS. My child has taken advantage of the opportunities that many others have not. I credit the excellent teachers and principal for developing a highly credible program with numerous opportunities for the children of this community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
