Gunston Middle

Summary:

Gunston Middle is a public middle school located in Arlington, Virginia, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,111 students. The school is part of the Arlington County Public Schools district, which is ranked 26th out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Gunston Middle has a more diverse student population compared to the nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (36.18%) and African American (16.65%) students. The school performs well in certain subject areas, particularly in Algebra I and Geometry, where the school's proficiency rates exceed the district and state averages. However, the school's performance in Mathematics and English Reading is more mixed, with some grades performing below the district and state averages. Gunston Middle's White and multi-racial students perform exceptionally well, ranking in the top 50 schools in Virginia for these subgroups, but the school's performance for other subgroups, such as Asian, African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, is more varied, with some subgroups ranking in the bottom half of Virginia schools.

Gunston Middle's diverse student population is a strength, but the school's performance for certain subgroups suggests that the school may need to focus on addressing the unique needs of these groups to improve their academic outcomes. The nearby schools, such as Williamsburg Middle and Dorothy Hamm Middle, consistently outperform Gunston Middle in academic measures, despite serving a less diverse student population. This suggests that factors beyond student demographics, such as instructional practices, resource allocation, and school leadership, may play a significant role in a school's academic performance. Gunston Middle's lower spending per student compared to the nearby schools may also be a contributing factor to its mixed academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Gunston is a great middle school with amazing diversity in its students and staff. Its partial immersion program in Spanish is top-notch and its Spanish for Fluent Speakers program allows students who speak Spanish at home but have never studied it the opportunity to become truly knowledgeable about their language. Excellent academic programs, dedicated teachers, an active PTA, and a principal who is always striving for the best make Gunston a perfect choice. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
