Washington-Liberty High

Summary:

Washington-Liberty High is a public high school located in Arlington, Virginia, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 2,715 students. The school is part of the Arlington County Public Schools district, which is ranked 26th out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Washington-Liberty High stands out for its diverse student population, strong academic performance, and consistent improvement over time. The school has a more racially diverse student body compared to nearby schools like Wakefield High, Yorktown High, and Langley High. Academically, the school has high proficiency rates in subjects like Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and English Reading, outperforming the Arlington County Public Schools district average. Additionally, the school's statewide ranking has improved over the years, indicating a positive trend in overall performance.

Washington-Liberty High also stands out for its strong performance across various student subgroups, ranking highly for White, multi-racial, and disabled students. However, the school's performance for Hispanic and English Language Learner students is relatively lower compared to other subgroups. The school's relatively lower percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients and lower student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools suggest a more socioeconomically diverse student population and potentially more individualized attention for students. While the school's per-student spending is lower than some nearby schools, its strong academic outcomes raise questions about the relationship between funding and educational excellence.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I enrolled my learning differences high schooler (w/an IEP) in Washington-Liberty upon moving to Arlington, given what appeared to be an otherwise good school rating. Sadly, our now 3 year experience has reflected anything but. There are well intended staff and policies in place, but the reality is surface level actions and what I can only describe as an ineffective box checking adherence to bureaucratic processes, leaving a bright (although different) child to struggle to the point of wanting to drop off. If your child is neurotypical, perhaps the school is good, but if your child requires an IEP or creative approaches to learning I would strongly advise against enrollment in Washington-Liberty High School. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
