Baker-Butler Elementary

Summary:

Baker-Butler Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlottesville, Virginia, serving around 740 students in grades PK-5. As part of the Albemarle County Public Schools district, which is ranked 44 out of 130 school districts in Virginia, Baker-Butler consistently outperforms the county and state averages in standardized test scores across various subjects and grade levels.

One key differentiating factor is Baker-Butler's diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 51.89% White, 9.59% African American, 15.54% Hispanic, and 11.08% Asian. This diversity sets it apart from some nearby schools, such as Hollymead Elementary, which has a higher concentration of White or minority students. Additionally, Baker-Butler has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 13 to 14.1 students per teacher, which can provide more individualized attention to students.

While Baker-Butler outperforms the county and state averages, some nearby schools within the same district, such as Hollymead Elementary, have demonstrated even stronger academic performance, consistently ranking in the top 10% of Virginia elementary schools. This suggests that Baker-Butler's performance, while strong, may not be the absolute best in the area. Nonetheless, Baker-Butler remains a top-performing elementary school in Virginia, and continued monitoring of its trends and a focus on maintaining its academic excellence will be crucial for its future success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Amazing school from the administration to the teachers to the PTO. Very satisfied with our Baker Butler elementary school experience. The teachers care and are highly qualified. This is a great school. My kids love going to school everyday! They are learning so much more than just the basics. They learn about diversity, respect and manners! Close Quote

Open Quote This large school needs major improvments in teaching, classroom orgnization, programs that reach the middle students who are ignored. Close Quote

Open Quote The academic expectatations and standards are high. I applaud that aspect of this school tremendously. However, the school is so socio-economically and racially misrepresented, that its atmosphere and approach to education is extremely bias. Therefore, it may be detrimental to the development of the "whole" child apart from his/her academic growth. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
