Summary:

Leslie H. Walton Middle is a public middle school in Charlottesville, Virginia, serving 339 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Albemarle County Public Schools district, which is ranked 44 out of 130 school districts in Virginia.

One key difference between Leslie H. Walton Middle and nearby schools is its racial makeup. The school has a significantly higher percentage of white students (74.04%) compared to Journey Middle (35.8%) and Buford Middle (36.13%) in the Charlottesville City Public Schools district. Academically, Leslie H. Walton Middle's proficiency rates in mathematics and reading are generally lower than the Albemarle County and Virginia state averages, though the school performs better in Algebra I. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, suggesting inconsistent performance compared to other middle schools in the state.

Further analysis reveals that Leslie H. Walton Middle's performance varies significantly among different student subgroups, with the school ranking 51st out of 278 Virginia middle schools for disabled students but only 340th out of 396 for white students. Socioeconomic factors may also play a role, as the school has a relatively high percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (37.76%) compared to nearby Lakeside Middle (23%). Additionally, the school's per-student spending, while increasing over the years, is still lower than some nearby middle schools, which may contribute to its relatively lower academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Walton has been on the upswing over the last few years. The kids are awesome, the staff are hard working, and the leadership is strong! GO WILDCATS! Close Quote

Open Quote It's been quite awhile since there was a review, and a lot has changed. There has been some turn over in administration, and the school seems to really be flourishing. The principal, Josh Walton and assistant principal, Sherica Jones-Lewis have really rallied everyone to do their best. The teachers are working hard, scores up, discipline is in check, and the school feeling like a great place to learn. The school won the state and region in the school's next competition last year, regularly places in the global virtual classroom competition, and the list goes on. My child is only in 5th grade, but I can't wait to send him to Walton next year. Close Quote

Open Quote Since 2011 when the last comment was made there has been a complete changed of administration to a new and incompetent group of administrators. Wish we had Jim Asher or Robert Johnson back. No pride, falling scores and more crime when there never was much other than petty crime. Check news, data and police reports available on the web. Open Quote My son started this school last year and we were nervous for him starting middle school, but the current principal, Mrs Agee and vice principal Mr Asher are excellent. They listen to all your worries and my son loved his teachers. They have a wonderful attitude, wrote for grants for the kids to have their own personal laptops and my son loved his first year. By the way the music is awesome too. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
