Jackson P. Burley Middle

Summary:

Jackson P. Burley Middle is a public middle school located in Charlottesville, Virginia, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 586 and is part of the Albemarle County Public Schools district.

Jackson P. Burley Middle has a relatively diverse student population, with 41.81% White, 19.28% African American, 25.77% Hispanic, and 4.44% Asian students. However, the school's academic performance is mixed, with some strong results in Algebra I and Geometry, but lower performance in Mathematics and English Reading compared to the Albemarle County and Virginia averages, particularly for African American and Hispanic student subgroups. The school has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (39.8% to 45.22%) compared to nearby schools like Joseph T. Henley Middle (13.37%) and Lakeside Middle (23%), but lower than some other nearby schools like Journey Middle (52.93%) and Buford Middle (73.67%).

Despite the higher per-student spending at Jackson P. Burley Middle compared to the state average, the school's academic performance is not commensurate with this level of spending, suggesting that factors other than funding may be contributing to the school's relatively low performance. The school's racial diversity does not seem to translate into strong academic performance across all student subgroups, and the school's performance lags behind some of the nearby schools with less diverse student populations and lower percentages of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, such as Joseph T. Henley Middle and Lakeside Middle.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My name is Alaya Starks and i went to Jackson P. Burley my 7th and 8th grade year and I loved it here. They have great opportunities for the students to get into like YWLP, fun field trips to Marshes and etc,and the teachers are wonderful. My favorite teacher was Mr. Craig Jennings he is AWESOME!!!! I loved being apart of the Bearettes. I wish I could go back but I have made it to my junior year now, I just have to say that I learned a lot there and enjoyed being apart of everything. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
