Wilson School

Summary:

Wilson School is an elementary school located in Payson, Utah, serving grades PK-6 with a student population of 331. The school is part of the Nebo School District, which is ranked 55 out of 98 districts in Utah and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Over the past several years, Wilson School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Utah elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most years.

Despite having a lower student-teacher ratio and higher spending per student compared to nearby schools, Wilson School consistently underperforms the Nebo District and Utah state averages on standardized tests in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science across grades 3-5. For example, in 2023-2024, only 24.1% of 3rd graders at Wilson School were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 45.9% in the Nebo District and 46.7% statewide. Additionally, Wilson School has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (59.52% in 2022-2023) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 14.63% to 33.23%.

The nearby schools, such as Santaquin School, Salem School, and Foothills School, generally perform better on standardized tests and have higher SchoolDigger ratings. This highlights the need for Wilson School to identify and implement effective strategies to improve student learning and achievement, as simply increasing funding and resources may not be the sole solution to the school's challenges.

Open Quote I did not see how many people had rated sis Mall very accomplished School A1 star nor did I hear the reasoning or metric behind their decision making however I have a fourth grader that goes here and if it were not for the covid-19 disaster I believe we would be doing much better here than at his previous school which was Parkview Elementary and from the metrics I do see that they use to children typically look smarter than the average Utah child of the same age so I have a hard time believing that this is a fair and accurate depiction of school and its children Close Quote

Open Quote This school has a high turnover of principals. I have had a number of experiences where I have gone to the principal at the time of my issue, and asked for help. I gave ample time for the principal to follow through with his word, that he would get to know my daughter so that she will feel more comfortable attending (she was going through some emotional issues which caused separation anxiety.) I was persistent, but not annoying and overbearing. I am the type to stay far away from the school when it comes to PTA and parents of the children. It is drama to me. I do however care about my children and how they are progressing in school. I have a 13 year old who is obviously out of elementary now, and a 6 year old. The leaders here do not follow through with their word. They seem to be bothered and act like their job is a chore. It's a very, very sad school to have your children placed in. I do not recommend. I think the only good thing about this school is the two women who are at the front desk. They are wonderful. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
