Franklin Discovery Academy

Summary:

Franklin Discovery Academy is a public charter elementary school located in Vineyard, Utah, serving 651 students from kindergarten to 6th grade as of the 2022-2023 school year.

Despite its relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, Franklin Discovery Academy consistently underperforms academically compared to the state and nearby Alpine District public schools. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in RISE assessments for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science were significantly lower than the state and district averages. For example, in 3rd grade English Language Arts, the school had a 23.3% proficiency rate, compared to the state average of 46.7%. Additionally, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Utah elementary schools and has a 0 out of 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Factors such as funding, student-teacher ratio, and the school's charter status may contribute to these academic challenges. Orem School, another Alpine District public school, had significantly higher proficiency rates across all grade levels in the 2023-2024 school year. With a per-student spending of $5,531 in the 2018-2019 school year, Franklin Discovery Academy also had lower funding compared to some nearby public schools, such as Westmore School ($9,149) and Bonneville School ($8,335).

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is so accommodating for parents. You choose the start time and end time 7:30-10:30 am and 2:30-5:30 pm. During covid-19 and the upcoming school year 2021 you can choose how many days a week you want them to go and if you want they provide a completely at home program. Starting in 3rd grade student can choose classes that interest them (called engage classes). My son says the teachers do a good job of making things fun. When I suggested my son go to a different school because we moved away he started crying. My son is above grade level in every subject. They teach and group kids at their level not their age. I honestly have nothing bad to say about this school. I think this website is giving them such a horrible rating because their are no reviews. Parents often find franklin after regular schools have failed their children. It might take these children a year or two to catch up with their peers but like I said my son started kindergarten here and is thriving. Close Quote

Open Quote Chaotic environment with not enough emphasis on the basics (like reading, writing, and math). The majority of teachers are new every year. Many teachers are unlicensed because the school doesn’t care about employing certified teachers. It’s no wonder because licensed teachers don’t want to make significantly less than a regular district teacher starting pay, AND get NO paid holidays, or benefits.

Admin has changed five times in four years. Students are not getting the proper opportunities to learn the basic to be successful beyond elementary school. Many I’ve talked to have had to pay for rotors to get their middle schooler caught up! Close Quote

Open Quote Amazing school!! Don't let however school digger calculate things sway you--they are totally off-base. Franklin recognizes kids for what they are-developing students--and does not treat them like a test score number like so many other schools. If you are concerned about a test score once per year, maybe this isn't your school, but if you care about your student actually being passionate about learning, experiencing things that most other schools can only dream of, then you really should check out this school. Since there are no other reviews I'm confused how school digger has come up with a score for them. The one star is bogus. I'd give them 6! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
