Canyon Grove Academy

Summary:

Canyon Grove Academy is a public charter elementary school serving around 650 students in grades K-8 in Pleasant Grove, Utah. According to the key insights, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Utah elementary schools, with a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger over the past several years.

Academically, Canyon Grove Academy lags significantly behind nearby public schools in the Alpine District. For example, in 2023-2024, only 23.1% of 3rd graders at Canyon Grove were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 46.7%. Similarly, only 19.2% of 3rd graders were proficient in Math, compared to the state average of 49.1%. This underperformance is also reflected in the school's low rankings and ratings, in contrast with higher-performing nearby schools like Deerfield School and Cedar Ridge School.

The key insights also suggest that the relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Canyon Grove Academy may indicate that the school serves a more affluent population compared to the nearby public schools. Additionally, the school's lower per-student spending and higher student-teacher ratio compared to the nearby public schools may be contributing factors to its underperformance.

Open Quote Quail Run Primary is not like any other school out there. My son has been at QRPS for 2 years now, and I have to say that he is thriving! The kids move around a lot and it prevents my son from getting bored. He finds each day is a new adventure and enjoys this school. He has a mild case of ADD, and I was told last year that because of they way they run the school it won't be a problem. And it hasn't. Infact if anything, the way they run the classes has been beneficial in every way for him. I am so lucky to be part of such a great school with great values and ideals. He did his entire kindergarten program last year in ASL. They alternate creative dance and P.E. Classes, and keep the kids in a variety of fun classes. And YES, they grow their own veggies! The kitchen staff is amazing, and the food selection every day is second to none. Your kids will be in good hands here Close Quote

Open Quote This school has little to no structure, the classes were loud and the teacher had to use a mini mike to talk over the students. I observed a class and was disapointed with the noise level and student behavior. Despite this I decided to give it a try and was disapointed, I pulled my child out and found a much better school. I know of many other parents that took their children out because of poor structure. The teachers rely on media and the students were shown the movie Napoleon Dynamite as a lesson! There are too many problems with this school to list, I would not recomend this school to any parent that cares about their childrens education. Close Quote

Open Quote The time I have been here at Quail Run, I have loved how the school runs. I was attracted to the position because as a child I had ADHD and had to work extremely hard to get the good grades I did. Quail Run makes it easier for kids to pay attention by using hands-on learning and "showing instead of telling." It's a lot easier for them to retain information if they are actively trying out everything they are supposed to be learning. The people I get to work with are excellent teachers and we all have one goal in mind: to teach our children the best way we can, and here at Quail Run that's our main goal. I love this school! Open Quote Quail Run is a great school. The teachers at Quail Run love what they do and are dedicated to making sure every student learns.

As a teacher, I appreciate that the school designates time for every subject, even those such as social studies, art and music that are not tested by the state and as such get overlooked at many schools.

I also appreciate the focus that Quail Run places on the environment and healthy living. Focusing on the environment makes the students more responsible as they learn I notice my students are more willing to make healthy choices because of the focus the school places on healthy eating in their school lunch selections. Open Quote This year 2012, is the second year for our children to be enrolled at QRPS. We realized that this year everything is so much more organized and much quieter than last year. All teachers are very enthusiastic to teach. The class sizes became smaller than last year, so students could receive more attention, individualized teaching and behavior problems have been minimized. We are happy with the good start to this year! Close Quote

Open Quote This is my second year teaching at Quail Run and this school year has been AMAZING! The staff this year is so pleasant and creative which makes creating lessons that cross curriculum fun and easy. It is such a great experience to be able to teach the subject that I love in a way that is exciting and innovative. It is a relief that the school encourages us to reach all learning types and is structured to do so. I love my job! Close Quote

Open Quote This is my second year working at Quail Run, and I love it! I love the emphasis on different learning styles and the inclusion of dance, music, drama, and foreign languages. I was even inspired to take a sign language class on my own time this Summer to keep up the skills I learned with my kids last year! I also really appreciate the emphasis on family and community, which is fostered by lots of collaboration between teachers.

The model of our school uses a lot of transitions. This can be good for many children, especially those who have a hard time sitting still.

I have seen so much growth and improvement in the years that I have worked here! This new school year especially is brimming with organization and positive teachers, and I'm really excited to see our continued progress in realizing our charter's goals. Close Quote

Open Quote In the time I have been employed with Quail Run Primary School I have been so impressed with all that the school has to offer to the students who attend. Each student receives personalized, individual academic attention due to the small class sizes which allows the students to learn and grow in their own unique learning ways. Quail Run Primary School also provides a non-traditional school day schedule where all grade levels travel around to a different classroom for each subject area. There are specialty teachers who specialize in and teach each of the subject areas, therefore, students are receiving a quality education from experts in each subject. The arts are introduced to students at a young age at this school including music, threatre, visual arts, and dance. Quail Run also introduces languages such as Spanish and ASL to students starting in the lower grades. I see a difference in the children who attend this school; they become well rounded and diverse individuals who begin to love learning and exploring all the world has to offer. I highly recommend Quail Run Primary School for its unique and diverse educational environment. Close Quote

Open Quote This is the third year that we have been at Quail Run. Our initial reason for choosing the school followed the premise that not every child learns the same way. We have appreciated the opportunity our son has to learn the way that he learns best, not in the traditional sense where he sits in one desk all day long.

We love having teachers that specialize in the subjects, teaching those subjects all day to all of the students as they rotate from classroom to classroom. This gives the teacher the opportunity to teach the subjects that they have the passion for at various levels rather than relying on one teacher to teach the same children all day, every subject (some that they are not interested in teaching). The kids are exposed to technology and various methods of learning that we never had in a traditional setting.

We appreciate the environmental focus of the school and the bus system. We have a school garden that the kids walk by everyday. They are able to see the food grow and have it prepared for their lunches or snacks.

I appreciate that we have more of a voice as parents at the school. We can be as involved as we want to be. In fact, it is encouraged! The Board has a parent representative that is voted in by the parents of the school. The more the parents have been involved, the better it gets.

To be fair and honest, the first two years were bumpy and didn't go as well as some of us wanted them to. It was to be expected given that the school was ENTIRELY new. It has come a long way and this year has started off very well. The staff is settled and the kids are learning! We have seen people come back who have left the school because their kids were happy at our school. The charter is coming to fruition and the evolution of the school has been an honor to be part of and every effort we have made towards it has been worth it. Everyone there knows that there is room to grow and they work hard to improve every day. Close Quote

Open Quote My ninth grader, elementary age kids and kindergartener all love Quail Run. As a parent I love it that the kids get to focus on math and science without sacrificing the arts. It's a great place for a well rounded education. We've been there all three years and I'm surprised by how negative some of the reviews are. We've had a great experience, and it just keeps getting better. Close Quote

Open Quote This is our first year at Quail Run. While I was uneasy about some of the reviews I had read online and even after taking a tour. My first impression was a little shaky we'll put it that way. I chose to give it a try anyway knowing that parent involvement makes a HUGE difference in the way charter schools function and feeling that what I saw on the school website was what I was looking for. I will admit I have had some frustrations as a parent with the organization and communication from administration but it is early in the year and I can honestly say for the first time EVER my kids actually LOVE school. They are excited to go to school, come home talking about all the fun things they got to do, everything they are learning and how fantastic the food is! I never got this at previous schools my kids have attended (even those that I felt were exception schools). Bottom line, I may not be feeling things are 100% perfect yet, but my kids absolutely are and that is something to be excited about! At the end of the day I don't really care that I feel that there could be better organization or more communication with me as a parent, I care that my kids are happy, eagerly learning, and succeeding in their surroundings! I am thrilled to see them coming home with stories about amazing activities they got to do instead of 15-20 worksheets they had to complete but didn't learn a single thing from doing. I am amazed to see how much they are eating (normally very light eaters) because they are active and involved ALL DAY LONG! We are enjoying opportunities in after school programs that they could never get from another school. For these reasons I am a believer that this school may just be what exactly what we've been looking for!! Close Quote

Open Quote This school really struggled the first year it opened but lots of new charter schools do. We stuck with it and this is the third year. Now our family loves Quail Run. The small class sizes are great and we like that they use BYU's SEEL reading program. My junior high son learned amazing things in math this last year and my younger kids LOVE math because of the fantastic math program. They do hands on projects instead of ridiculous worksheets and the teachers are already working together on projects that connect different classes. As a CURRENT parent of students, I recommend this school to anyone who is looking for a school that offers quality teaching that is totally different from the boring experience at public schools and other charter schools in the area. Open Quote This school has so many problems I don't know how it is still in operation. My child attended during the first year and I knew there would be problems because it was a first year charter school. However, the second year there were more problems. Teachers kept leaving the school, there were problems with the school lunch staff being demeaning to the students and the bullying problems were outrageous. The lack of a clear discipline program and lack of research based curriculum were enough for me to pull my child out and never look back. There are other schools that are much better than this one. I don't want my child to suffer any longer because of this school. I would never recommend this school to anyone, unless the recommendation was to run far away from this school. I wish I could give this school a negative rating. Close Quote

Open Quote I have two children who have attended Quail Run both years it was open so far and we have returned for another year. There have been a few problems because it's such a new school but overall, we are pleased. The small atmosphere and class sizes means kids get personal attention and my kids love the after school classes too. There are a couple of teachers that I'm glad left last year because they were kind of negative but most of the teachers are awesome.

We like the dance classes and band program and especially like their math program.

I wish I could give it 5 stars but I really can't yet. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll be ready to give it 5. Close Quote

Open Quote Don't even bother with this school. It has so many problems that you will be wasting your time researching it. My kid was there from August 2011 to Jan 2012. He went through 3 kindergarten teachers and 2 resource teachers. All that before Christmas break. Nothing to see here. Move on to the next school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
