Midvale School

Summary:

Midvale School is an elementary school located in Midvale, Utah, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 722 students. The school is part of the Canyons District, which is ranked 27th out of 98 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively high spending per student at $9,736, Midvale School consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Utah, ranking between 517 and 556 out of 561 schools in the state over the past several years. The school's performance on the RISE assessments is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 14.6% of 3rd graders, 13.9% of 4th graders, and 15.6% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 46.7%, 44%, and 48.3%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly concerning for its Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low socioeconomic status student subgroups.

When comparing Midvale School to other nearby schools in the Canyons District, such as East Midvale School, Sandy School, and Midvalley School, it is clear that Midvale School is an outlier in terms of academic performance. These nearby schools, while still facing challenges, generally outperform Midvale School on the RISE assessments and have higher statewide rankings. However, the data suggests that there are opportunities for Midvale School to improve and better serve its students by closely examining the factors contributing to the school's low performance and implementing evidence-based strategies.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love the Spanish Dual Immersion program of this school. My son has been our professional translator and he is just finishing 2nd grade! The staff is absolutely amazing. Kids have such potential. Plus they have a brand new building, which is totally luxurious and logistically wise well set up for the children and their learning abilities. The school offers a lot of items in support of learning, other schools do not have these options. Love this school and their administration staff, those ladies are amazing at each single welcoming of your presence. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
