Hillcrest High

Summary:

Hillcrest High is a public high school located in Midvale, Utah, serving grades 8-12 with a total enrollment of 2,296 students. It is part of the Canyons School District, which is ranked 27th out of 98 districts in Utah and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hillcrest High consistently performs above the state average in proficiency rates for the Utah Aspire Plus assessments in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. The school ranks highly for its White students (top 20% in the state) and English Language Learners (top 3% in the state), but less so for its Hispanic students (bottom 60% in the state) and low-socioeconomic status students (bottom 60% in the state). Hillcrest High's academic performance is generally stronger than that of Jordan High, another large high school in the Canyons District, but it lags behind the highly-ranked Brighton High, also in the Canyons District.

Hillcrest High has a relatively high percentage of students (around 37%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which is a proxy for low-income status. The school's funding and resource allocation, with a relatively high per-student spending level ($10,113 in 2018-2019) but a higher student-teacher ratio (23.7 in 2022-2023), may be an area for further exploration and potential improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Hillcrest High has undergone somewhat of a shift in demographics in the past 30 years. Today (2017) about 1 in 4 students come from a Latino background. The majority of the population comes from a working class/lower middle class background. This makes the students, in my opinion, more likely to work and think about what is necessary to make a living and develop their talents and abilities. They are problem solvers, They are friendly. They do their best. The recent renovations have also boosted their science and technology resources. I love to substitute teach there, and not just because it is my alma mater. The only thing that the school could improve on, and it must be due to budget cuts, is to bring back the creative writing magazine so more students have a creative outlet. They have very creative people in drama, choir, band, etc. and put on an amazing production of "Mary Poppins" in November 2016, by the way. The teachers and administration are as dedicated as they ever were. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
