Monticello Academy

Summary:

Monticello Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in West Valley City, Utah, with a diverse student population that is majority Hispanic. While the school has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Utah elementary schools by SchoolDigger, with a 2-star rating out of 5 in recent years, it appears to be doing a relatively good job of serving its Hispanic student population, ranking in the top 10 elementary schools in Utah for this subgroup in recent years.

Monticello Academy's student performance on RISE assessments is generally below the state average, particularly in math and science. However, the school spends around $7,686 per student, which is lower than the nearby Granite District schools, such as West Valley School at $8,649 per student. Additionally, Monticello Academy has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of around 20:1, which is better than the nearby Granite District schools, such as West Valley School at 23.7:1.

When comparing Monticello Academy to the nearby traditional public schools in the Granite District, the data suggests that Monticello Academy may be facing challenges in meeting the academic needs of its diverse student population, particularly in the areas of math and science. The school's lower funding and resource levels compared to nearby traditional public schools may be contributing factors. However, the school's strength in serving its Hispanic student population and smaller class sizes could be potential areas of focus for improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have moved to another school after staying at this one and have received bad grades in almost all of my core classes. I’ve only been getting good grades in Science and ELA. This has been causing a lot of stress for me as I have Asian parents that keep telling me that i’m a failure and such (or at least that’s how they make me feel). The kids there weren’t that bad but it’s just the academics. Please fix this. (I have a friend who still stays there too and she is facing a lot of stress with her parents too because of the academics, you might be telling me “maybe you should pay attention” and I try to but I somehow ended up failing and it just makes me feel even more useless than before) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
