Buffalo Creek Elementary

Summary:

Buffalo Creek Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 441 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Spring Branch Independent School District.

Buffalo Creek Elementary faces several challenges, including a significantly higher Hispanic student population (89.34%) and a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (91.8% to 93.2%) compared to surrounding schools. The school's student performance on STAAR tests is generally lower than district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects, with only 35.29% of 3rd graders proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 59.03% for the district and 48.85% for the state. However, the school's rankings for specific student groups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and Special Education students, are generally higher than its overall school ranking, indicating that these groups are performing relatively better compared to their peers statewide.

While Buffalo Creek Elementary's performance is lower than the district and state averages, some nearby schools, such as Terrace Elementary and Ridgecrest Elementary, have higher student performance on STAAR tests and better overall rankings, suggesting that there may be opportunities to learn from the practices and strategies of these higher-performing schools. Additionally, Buffalo Creek Elementary's spending per student has increased over the past few years, but this increased funding does not appear to have translated into significantly improved student outcomes, indicating that the school may need to examine how it is allocating and utilizing its resources.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Love the teachers and staff at BCE. We transferred in the Spring 2012 Semester after leaving a highly-regarded private school in the neighborhood. The attention and help we received from BCE surpassed that we received at the private school in leaps and bounds. All the teachers are committed to each and every child and to helping them reach their potential, working with them at the level that the individual needs. The admin staff were so supportive and helpful in getting us quickly transitioned, answering our questions and concerns. The principal and assistant principal are wonderful and have been very responsive to our needs, questions and concerns. Anyone considering BCE for their child should be confident that every effort will be expended to help that child thrive. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
