Woodview Elementary

Summary:

Woodview Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 525 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD). The school has a predominantly Hispanic student population, with significant percentages of African American and White students as well.

Woodview Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with significantly lower performance on STAAR tests compared to the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 28.77% of 3rd-grade students at Woodview were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 59.03% for the SBISD district and 48.85% for the state of Texas. The school's performance also varies across different student subgroups, with African American students performing relatively better than Hispanic, English Language Learner, and economically disadvantaged students, who all rank in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools for their respective subgroups.

Interestingly, nearby SBISD schools, such as Memorial Drive Elementary and Frostwood Elementary, rank among the top 5% of Texas elementary schools, with significantly higher proficiency rates on STAAR tests compared to Woodview Elementary. This stark contrast in academic performance within the same district suggests that factors beyond just district-level resources and policies may be at play. While Woodview's high percentage of economically disadvantaged and English Language Learner students may present unique challenges, the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending could potentially be leveraged to implement more effective instructional strategies and support programs.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The staff at woodview is awesome. The Principal is the best. They all care a ton about the kids and about teaching them to learn. It does not have the support that someother schools do in SBISD but the effort and care that goes into each and every student is head and shoulders above the rest. As with any school the more parent involvement the better. It is our jobs as parents to make sure our kids are educated not the teachers responsibility. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
