Southwest High School

Summary:

Southwest High School is a public high school located in San Antonio, Texas, serving 2,152 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Southwest Independent School District, which has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Southwest High School maintains relatively high graduation rates, ranging from 94.2% to 98.3% over the past five years, and low dropout rates, its academic performance as measured by STAAR EOC test scores has been consistently lower than the state and district averages across various subject areas. When compared to nearby schools, such as Southwest Legacy High School and Cast STEM High School, both in the same district, Southwest High School underperforms in test scores. Interestingly, schools in other districts, like Shirleen Zacharias Early College Leadership Academy and Virginia Allred Stacey Junior/Senior High School, significantly outperform Southwest High School in both test scores and graduation rates.

The school's student population is predominantly Hispanic (86.9%), with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (71.84%). While the school's African American students perform relatively better than other subgroups, the White and Gifted and Talented student subgroups perform poorly, ranking in the bottom quarter of Texas high schools. The school's per-student spending has increased moderately, but its student-teacher ratio remains higher than some nearby schools, suggesting that resource allocation may not be the primary driver of its academic performance challenges. Overall, Southwest High School faces several areas for improvement, particularly in academic achievement, but also has some positive indicators, such as its graduation and dropout rates.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was a former student of this school from 2001-2005 it was a good atmosphere with alot of pride. Teachers were great always showed respect and helped out everyone I always felt safe at this school as well. This school could always be one of the best in San Antonio if TX schools had focus on class all year than a test at the end of one. This school is deserves more credit than what most people give it. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
