Shelbyville School

Summary:

Shelbyville School is an alternative public school serving grades PK-12 in the Shelbyville Independent School District, with a student population of 831 that is predominantly White (72.68%), with significant percentages of African American (12.88%) and Hispanic (11.67%) students.

Shelbyville School has maintained very high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 90.2% to 100% over the past 5 years, significantly higher than the state average. The school also has an impressive 0% dropout rate for the past 5 years and generally outperforms the state and district averages on STAAR assessments, particularly in reading and math. However, there are some areas where the school lags behind, such as 8th grade social studies. Compared to the nearby Tenaha Schools and Joaquin Schools, Shelbyville School has a significantly higher percentage of White students and lower percentages of Hispanic and African American students.

Despite having higher per-student spending than the nearby Tenaha Independent School District (Isd) and Joaquin Independent School District (Isd), Shelbyville School does not necessarily have the highest test scores or graduation rates among the three schools, suggesting that factors beyond just funding may be at play. Additionally, Shelbyville School has a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students (free/reduced lunch recipients) compared to Joaquin Schools, but lower than Tenaha Schools, which may contribute to some of the differences in academic performance between the schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love this small town school. The teachers are willing to go the extra mile to help their students. It seems like most all of the kids get along really well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
