Summary:

Davis Middle is a public middle school in San Antonio, Texas, serving 545 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the San Antonio Independent School District, which is ranked 811 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Davis Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Texas middle schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years.

The school faces significant challenges, including a student population that is 31.01% African American, 65.5% Hispanic, and only 1.65% White, which is significantly more diverse than the state average. Academically, Davis Middle's performance is well below state and district averages across all subject areas and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 19.83% of 6th graders, 22.22% of 7th graders, and 18.86% of 8th graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to the state averages of 54.45%, 52.08%, and 54.09%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly low for African American and Hispanic students, as well as for students with special needs, English language learners, and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

When comparing Davis Middle to other nearby schools, such as Hot Wells Middle, which is also in the San Antonio ISD, the academic performance gap is quite stark, with Hot Wells significantly outperforming Davis Middle across all subject areas and grade levels. Despite being a long-standing school, Davis Middle has not shown any meaningful improvement in its academic performance or state rankings over the past decade, indicating a need for significant intervention and support to address the unique needs of its student population and improve outcomes for the community it serves.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Being a former teacher at Davis Middle School there have been experiences that has led me to regret accepting a position at this campus. The environment at this school is completely unsafe, and that is due to the administration. The principal, Sharene Dixon, has neglected in supporting the teachers and the students. She has created an environment that is toxic and forced teachers to either resign or relocate to different schools. She was unprofessional during faculty meetings and even cussed at our employees. She has talked badly about teachers who she did not like and reassured to those that are closest to her that these teachers that she did not like, were not going to have a place next year. The teachers that she referred to were the most passionate people. They were passionate about the curriculum being taught and their students. She sets the example for bullying. There were times where she made the environment so hostile that some staff were intimidated to be in the same hall as her. Aside of providing intervention to students who needed it the most, she suspended them or even allowed arrests. She does not care about the students, and only cares for money and bullying others. The saddest thing is that there is so much more wrong doing... So I suggest and advise, for the safety of your child, do not send them to this school where she is in leadership. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
