Bonham Academy is a public charter elementary school serving around 600 students in grades K-8 in San Antonio, Texas. The school is part of the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), which is ranked 811 out of 968 districts in the state.

Bonham Academy consistently outperforms the SAISD and Texas state averages on STAAR tests, with 59.18% of 3rd graders proficient or better in reading compared to 30.88% for SAISD and 48.85% for Texas. The school's performance is particularly strong for certain student subgroups, such as white students ranking 940 out of 3,082 Texas elementary schools in reading. Bonham Academy also has relatively low dropout rates, ranging from 0.0% to 2.3% in recent years, which is lower than the district and state averages. Compared to nearby SAISD schools like Douglass Elementary, Briscoe Elementary, Herff Elementary, and J.T. Brackenridge Elementary, Bonham Academy outperforms them on various academic metrics. However, the school may need to focus more on supporting its gifted and talented, special education, and socioeconomically disadvantaged students to ensure all learners are reaching their full potential.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This once was a very good school, and once had an excellent dual-language program. But this is no longer true. The bilingual program doesn't work for anybody. The English speakers don't learn Spanish. The Spanish speakers don't succeed in learning high levels of English. If you want your children to learn Spanish, there are better options. If you don't care about your kids learning Spanish and just want them in a good program, it's better to send them to a high quality English program. The leadership at SAISD does not care about maintaining a high quality dual-language program, so the educators at the school don't either. Why waste time and your child's opportunities at a good education. Close Quote

Open Quote The Spanish Language Immersion program is phenomenal. Also, it's no longer Bonham Elementary but Bonham Academy and it goes to 8th grade.

This is one of the SAISD innercity elementary level success stories. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
