Wilson Middle

Summary:

Wilson Middle is a public middle school located in Plano, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 823. It is part of the Plano Independent School District, which is ranked 185 out of 968 school districts in Texas and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Wilson Middle has a relatively diverse student population, with 38.4% White, 15.31% African American, 35.72% Hispanic, and 5.71% Asian students, its academic performance as measured by STAAR test scores is generally lower than the Plano ISD district average and the state average across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, the percentage of students proficient or better in STAAR Reading for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at Wilson Middle was 54.95%, 63.31%, and 61.19%, respectively, compared to the Plano ISD district averages of 65.94%, 64.41%, and 70.1%. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White and Special Education students performing relatively well, but Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Low Socioeconomic Status students struggling.

When compared to other middle schools in the Plano ISD district, such as Schimelpfenig Middle and Haggard Middle, which consistently rank in the top 20-25% of Texas middle schools, Wilson Middle generally performs worse academically. This could be due to the school's higher percentage of free and reduced-lunch recipients (45.08% in 2022-2023) compared to the higher-performing Plano ISD schools, suggesting that socioeconomic factors may play a role in the school's academic performance. Addressing the achievement gaps among its various student subgroups, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, could be a key focus area for Wilson Middle to improve its overall performance and outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is not the best. it's teachers are strict and they don't give kids enough time to eat. They put too much pressure on them!! it's teachers don't give the right punishments to the bad kids. The school itself is full of drama and hypocritism. I love the other programs though, such as Orchestra, Acting, Basketball, etc. I appreciate that they are trying to help us learn and become better people but they need to lay off it a bit. Overall, they are good for high grades, just not on the social status and the kids themselves. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
