Glenoaks Elementary

Summary:

Glenoaks Elementary is a public elementary school in San Antonio, Texas, serving 565 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Northside Independent School District, which is ranked 496 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Glenoaks Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic (53.63%) and Asian (19.29%) students compared to nearby schools, but its academic performance consistently ranks in the bottom 15% of Texas elementary schools. The school's STAAR test scores are much lower than district and state averages, with only 12.5% of 3rd graders proficient or better in reading, compared to 44.52% for the district and 48.85% for the state. Glenoaks Elementary also has a very high percentage of students (over 90%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While Glenoaks Elementary is part of the same school district as Oak Hills Terrace Elementary and Glass Elementary, its academic performance is significantly lower than these nearby schools, which have higher test scores and better statewide rankings. The school's declining performance over the past several years, with its statewide ranking dropping from the top 38% to the bottom 15% of Texas elementary schools, suggests that Glenoaks Elementary may face significant challenges in terms of resources, funding, and support for its students and teachers.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We LOVE Glenoaks Elementary! They have an incredible staff that has the students' well being first on their list. We have a son who is academically ahead of his class, yet he is one of the youngest in his class. Academically, he could probably test to skip a grade, but socially he is better to stay with his class. The staff at Glenoaks looks at his situation just as they do with every child, and makes decisions with us to make sure he in in the best place for him to grow, both academically AND socially. Since the first grade he has attended GT classes and for math and reading he attends the next grade level up. This requires some juggling to make sure he can get to those classes because they may not be at the same time for 2 different grades. But the school does what they have to in his best interest. We have meetings twice a year, and not just with his teacher...the principal, counselors, his GT teacher, and his 2 classroom teachers for each grade will attend...to assess his progress. They do their best to make sure every child is given the surroundings and attention they need to be the best they can be. We really want to move, but will not even consider it before he reaches 5th grade because this school has been too valuable to us to give up. Kudos to Glenoaks Elementary!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
