Serna Elementary

Summary:

Serna Elementary is a public elementary school in San Antonio, Texas, serving 315 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the North East Independent School District (NEISD), which is ranked 421 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its diverse student population, with a majority Hispanic (56%) and African American (30%) enrollment, Serna Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Texas elementary schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. The school's STAAR test scores are significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, indicating a struggle to provide a high-quality education to its students. This underperformance is consistent across all student subgroups, including female, male, African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the NEISD district, such as Northwood Elementary and Windcrest Elementary, generally perform much better academically than Serna Elementary, with higher STAAR scores and better overall rankings. Additionally, Serna Elementary has a high percentage of students (over 90%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population, and the school spends significantly more per student ($14,457 in 2020-2021) compared to the nearby schools, which may suggest unique challenges that the school is facing.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son went here for kindergarten class from 2013-2014, one day I went to have lunch with him, I was unaware that I had to sign in at the office before going to the classroom or cafeteria. While we were eating lunch the teacher noticed I didn't have a wristband(which I would've got if I signed in), she grabbed me by both arms and raised her voice at me saying "You can not be here", I was also 4 MONTHS PREGNANT!! I went straight to the principal to talk about the grabbing and since she also put me at risk with my unborn child, I wanted my son in a different class with a good teacher but the principal just said just let him finish the year with her. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
