Keefer Crossing Middle

Summary:

Keefer Crossing Middle is a public middle school located in New Caney, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 1,213. The school is part of the New Caney Independent School District, which is ranked 712 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Keefer Crossing Middle faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, particularly in comparison to nearby schools like York J H and Woodridge Forest Middle. The school consistently underperforms the state and district averages on STAAR assessments across all grade levels and subjects, with proficiency rates in reading (34.84-35.75%) and math (17.96-24.63%) well below the state averages (52.08-54.45% in reading, 31.89-40.23% in math). Keefer Crossing Middle's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas middle schools for White, Gifted and Talented, and English Language Learner students.

The high percentage of Hispanic (66.69%) and economically disadvantaged (81.12%) students at Keefer Crossing Middle likely contributes to the school's academic struggles. The school's dropout rate has also seen a gradual increase, from 0.2% in 2017-2018 to 1.0% in 2021-2022, which is higher than the state average. Despite these challenges, the school's performance for certain subgroups, such as African American and Hispanic students, suggests that there may be opportunities for targeted interventions and support to help improve overall academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has 35 plus kids in one classroom with only one teacher. If you expect your kid to learn forget it. This school has the most kids out of the other middle schools in the district. The school doesn't even deserve the one star, I just had to put it so I can write this comment about them.
BE AWARE this school schedules your kids repeated electives so they are so bored. They don't know how to schedule the classes or it wouldn't happen that way. There's electives so they don't have to repeat the same ones time after time. If you ask the counselor for help to change their schedule they won't do it. They will change your schedule without notice to your kid. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
