Brown Elementary

Summary:

Brown Elementary is a public elementary school located in Lubbock, Texas, serving grades 4-5 with a student population of 238. The school is part of the Lubbock Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 545 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Brown Elementary faces significant challenges in providing quality education to its students. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Texas elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. This is significantly lower than the nearby schools, such as Wilson Elementary, which range from 1 to 5 stars. Brown Elementary's proficiency rates in STAAR Reading, Mathematics, and Science are also significantly lower than the Lubbock ISD and Texas state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 19.64% of 4th-grade students at Brown Elementary were proficient in STAAR Reading, compared to 48.85% for Lubbock ISD and 50.66% for Texas.

The school's challenges may be linked to its high percentage of students from low-income backgrounds, with over 94% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the nearby schools, which range from 24.14% to 98.04%. Despite the relatively low student-teacher ratio at Brown Elementary, ranging from 11 to 14 students per teacher, this does not seem to be translating into improved academic outcomes. Addressing the issues at Brown Elementary will likely require a multi-faceted approach that considers the unique needs and circumstances of the school and its community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
