Grandview Hills Elementary

Summary:

Grandview Hills Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving grades PK-5 and part of the Leander Independent School District (ISD). The school has seen a decline in its statewide ranking in recent years, dropping from a high of 912 out of 4,359 Texas elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 2,806 out of 4,647 in 2022-2023, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Grandview Hills Elementary has a relatively diverse student population, with 39.17% White, 15.1% African American, 27.13% Hispanic, and 10.07% Asian students. However, the school has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (44.42%) compared to nearby schools like Cypress Elementary (20.83%) and Laura Welch Bush Elementary (5.33%), suggesting a higher proportion of students from lower-income families. The school's student performance on STAAR tests is generally lower than the Leander ISD and Texas state averages, particularly in mathematics and science.

Grandview Hills Elementary's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic, White, and Gifted and Talented students ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools in recent years. This uneven subgroup performance suggests that the school may need to focus on addressing the unique needs of these groups to improve overall academic outcomes. When compared to other elementary schools in the Round Rock ISD and Leander ISD districts, Grandview Hills Elementary generally underperforms, particularly in mathematics and science, indicating that the school may benefit from learning from the instructional practices and strategies used by higher-performing nearby schools such as Spicewood Elementary and Steiner Ranch Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have two children who have attended GVHE. The oldest is in middle school this year. GVHE is an IB school and the smallest school in the district. The small student population may skew statistical test results, but my students, both in the advanced programs, have received an excellent education, both academically and socially/emotionally. The students I see who have come out of GVHE into the middle school not only compete academically with the students from the other feeder school (that apparently has higher test scores and richer kids), but have a greater sense of the world around them, compassion, and empathy. GVHE is the best kept secret in Austin. Close Quote

Open Quote GVHE is an IB school and focuses on the education of children's minds and characters. I find the staff and administration to be extremely committed to creating a holistic educational experience for the children. My child is in Fourth grade now and every teacher he has had for the last four years has been compassionate and nurturing and committed to his success.

there are always struggles with some aspect of public schools. I am violently in disagreement with the curriculum established by the State, as well as the emphasis on testing--in my opinion, GVHE has done a great job trying to find a balance between what is required by the State and District and what is important to the overall education of the students.

In order to thrive, the kids must love going to school--GVHE tries hard to make school engaging and works hard to create a community. Close Quote

Open Quote I did not like this school at all. The teachers seem inexperienced and aren't able to teach especially the higher performing children. The administration was unavailable. There is very little effort put into anything. It was not a good experience at all. Even though I heard many good things about this school, no one seems interested in improving its performance despite decreased scores in all areas and I didn't feel like my child was learning much of anything. My child will not be going here next year and it doesn't seem like anyone knows or cares. Close Quote

Open Quote I have had at least one child here since the school opened. Initially I was very happy but we have had a change in administration in the last few years and things have started to go down hill. We had a mass exit of teachers and frankly, the principle just flat out doesn't listen to the parents and becomes defensive when presented with even run of the mill mundane questions. There is always a lice outbreak that nothing is ever done about and the lowest end students are catered to leaving the higher achieving children without as many resources at the school. It has become a very it's not fair kind of mentality and children doing well are not rewarded for working hard. We have had some excellent teachers but the truth is it is a crap shoot and good luck getting the administration to do anything at all helpful to solve any type of problem. Honestly, why even pay administrators who can't solve problems? This school could go back to its excellent status but it seems to be feeding off of the administration. Even more importantly, this school is sliding academically. I never realized before how the administration of the school really does set the tone and affects everything. It's too bad but I will likely try to move mine to Riverplace Elementary next year. It's not horrible or anything dramatic but compared to where it was 3, 5 an 7 years ago, it's just not nearly as good. Close Quote

Open Quote My son and daughter attend this school and overall I have been happy with parent involvment, the teachers, academics, etc. However, after my daughter broke her leg at school I have been beyond frustrated and disappointed with the teachers, principal as well as the nursing staff. It is truly disappointing that after all a kid goes through with a cast being put on and soon discovering how little than can do on their own that they then get to go back to school and have NOONE help or accomodate a child in a full leg cast. If you send your kid to school here beware of any injuries not only will they watch it happen, but then they will continue to do nothing to accomodate your child. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
