Kilgore High School

Summary:

Kilgore High School is a public high school in Kilgore, Texas, serving 1,164 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Kilgore Independent School District, which is ranked 585 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Kilgore High School has maintained strong graduation rates, ranging from 91.8% to 92.5% over the past five years, which is higher than the state average. However, the school's STAAR test scores are generally below the state and district averages across various subject areas and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in Algebra I (29.43%), English I Reading (45.82%), and English II Reading (49.71%) were lower than the state and district averages. Interestingly, Kilgore High School has shown strong performance in the Gifted and Talented student subgroup, ranking in the top 5 out of 1,182 Texas high schools in 2021-2022 and 2020-2021. On the other hand, the school has struggled to support its Special Education student population, ranking in the bottom 10% of Texas high schools in this subgroup for the past three years.

When compared to nearby schools, West Rusk High School, White Oak High School, and Sabine High School all have higher STAAR test scores and higher four-year graduation rates than Kilgore High School. This may be due in part to the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (70.62%) at Kilgore High School, which could contribute to the school's lower academic performance compared to its neighbors.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote DO NOT send your kids to this school. They will not receive a quality education. The counselors are worthless. And if your kid is white (and you aren't employed as a teacher) they are highly discriminated against. Only have about 5 teachers in this whole school that understand what they are teaching. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
