Sundown Elementary

Summary:

Sundown Elementary is a public elementary school in Katy, Texas, serving 722 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Katy Independent School District, which is ranked 158 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 4-star rating.

Sundown Elementary faces several academic challenges. Its STAAR test scores are generally lower than the Katy ISD and Texas state averages across various grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of Sundown Elementary students proficient or better in STAAR Reading was 37.5% for 3rd grade, 45.19% for 4th grade, and 37.76% for 5th grade, compared to Katy ISD's 66.61%, 65.55%, and 69.86%, and the Texas state average of 48.85%, 50.66%, and 53.96%. Similar performance gaps are observed in STAAR Mathematics and STAAR Science. Sundown Elementary's academic performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Asian and African American students generally performing better than the school's overall average, while Hispanic, White, English Language Learner, and Economically Disadvantaged students tend to perform worse.

Sundown Elementary's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 1,489 out of 4,479 Texas elementary schools in 2018-2019 to 3,473 out of 4,675 in 2023-2024. The school's SchoolDigger rating has also decreased from 3 stars out of 5 in 2020-2021 to 1 star out of 5 in the current school year. This is likely due in part to the high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with 86.15% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. Sundown Elementary's academic performance is generally lower than the nearby McRoberts Elementary, Nottingham Country Elementary, and Ursula Stephens Elementary, which have higher STAAR test scores, better statewide rankings, and lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son started this school last year in kindergarten not knowing how to read he is now in 1st grade and is able to read books with over 100 pages from cover to cover on his own. This school has done an amazing job with my sons education. From my experience the teachers are helpful, caring and loving. I can not say anything bad about this school cause we have not had any bad experiences. My son loves it here, he has made some great friend and has learned so much. Close Quote

Open Quote This is my sons first year of school he was admitted into the ppcd program for special needs children. Well they call my cell to tell me my child is sick knowing what kind of work I do and that I cannot touch my cell and that they must go threw my job. By the time I am able to receive the vmail and call them because of course they didn't call my job , the lady answers and says we have no clue where your son is. I then am transferred , without my consent, to the teachers vmail to leave a message. I call the main line back and now its going to straight vmail. So I am left to locate my son on my own with them not caring. My poor son was put on the bus sick without them calling me to inform what they plan to do, they did not go down my who to call list( I checked) , and they never call my work . Worse experience of my life I will never recommend this school .

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
