Houston Academy For International Studies stands out for its exceptional academic performance, with students significantly outperforming the district and state averages on STAAR End-of-Course exams across all subjects. The school's graduation rates have been 100% or close to it in recent years, and it excels in supporting the achievement of diverse student subgroups, including African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students. Despite having a relatively high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, the school maintains its strong academic profile, suggesting it is effectively supporting and challenging students from diverse backgrounds.

Compared to other high-performing magnet schools in the area, such as Carnegie Vanguard High School and Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Houston Academy For International Studies demonstrates its ability to serve a more socioeconomically diverse student population while still achieving exceptional results. As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A small school with small classes. Great teachers, They keep the parents well inform. I like that they treat there students like young adults. One of the few schools that I know of, Probably the only one that a student can graduate with an Associate Degree. We need more schools like Houston Academy for International Studies. HISD can not afford any more cut backs. If we want our children to succeed in our country. We need to put our tax dollars into our schools. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
