Scarborough High School

Summary:

Scarborough High School is a public magnet high school in Houston, Texas, serving 750 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Houston Independent School District, which is ranked 572 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Scarborough High School faces significant challenges, with a student population that is 82.4% Hispanic and over 96% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. The school consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas high schools, with academic performance on STAAR End-of-Course exams significantly below state and district averages across all subject areas. Scarborough's 4-year graduation rate ranges from 80.1% to 87.5%, lower than the state and district averages, and its dropout rate has been higher than the state and district, ranging from 0.5% to 4.0% over the past five years.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Memorial High School in the Spring Branch Independent School District, Scarborough High School generally performs worse academically. The school's Gifted and Talented student subgroup also ranks in the bottom 10% of Texas high schools, indicating a lack of support or opportunities for high-achieving students. Despite Scarborough's spending per student ($11,264 in 2020-2021) being higher than the state average, the academic performance and outcomes suggest the additional funding is not translating into improved student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My niece just moved to Scarborough and I was surprise when I saw her schedule. She comes from another city in TX. She didn't pass her STAAR tests on May 2012. And she is an average students F, C, and B. I could not believe when I saw her Schedule. She currently taking AP and Pre-AP Classes. I am glad for my niece, but come on; I thought you have to have good grades in order to be in advance classes. This just confirms that this school doesn't really prepare you for the real world. For sure my daughter will not go there. I felt that if you get a free ride in high school. It will be very difficult to be successful in college. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
