Mading Elementary

Summary:

Mading Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 339 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Houston Independent School District (HISD), which is ranked 572 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Mading Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on STAAR tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 9.3% of 3rd-grade students and 42.11% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to state averages of 48.85% and 53.96%, respectively. The school's African American and Hispanic student subgroups perform particularly poorly, ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools. In contrast, Mading's English Language Learner (ELL) and Special Education student subgroups perform better, ranking in the middle to upper-middle range.

Interestingly, the nearby Kelso Elementary and Seguin Elementary schools in the HISD district perform similarly to or slightly better than Mading, while the Southside Elementary charter school outperforms Mading and the other nearby district schools. Additionally, the Iltexas Houston Orem Elementary charter school, located further away, performs significantly worse than Mading across all subject areas and grade levels. Despite Mading's higher per-student spending and relatively low student-teacher ratio, the school's poor academic outcomes suggest that factors beyond just resources and staffing may be contributing to its challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
