Briargrove Elementary

Summary:

Briargrove Elementary is a public elementary school in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) that serves grades PK-5, with a diverse student population of around 836 students.

While Briargrove Elementary has seen a decline in its statewide ranking in recent years, dropping from a high of 869 out of 4,359 Texas elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 2,763 out of 4,647 in 2022-2023, the school's test scores, particularly in reading and math, lag behind the state and district averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 43.97% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 48.85% statewide and 44.66% in HISD. Similarly, in 5th grade STAAR Math, only 38.1% of Briargrove students were proficient or better, compared to 48.96% statewide and 48.48% in HISD. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Asian and White students tending to perform better than their African American and Hispanic peers.

Interestingly, Briargrove Elementary's performance lags behind several nearby schools, such as Briarmeadow Charter, Hunters Creek Elementary, and Memorial Drive Elementary, which all have higher test scores and statewide rankings. However, the school's diverse student population, increased spending, and improved student-teacher ratio suggest opportunities for growth and improvement if the right strategies and interventions are implemented.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote academically school is extremely poor. No home work to kids. Fortunately, we have new principal (Kelly M) in 2020. When Thayer Hutcheson was principal, we were getting hell lot of emails almost every week about donations rather than academics.

I wont recommend this school if you are looking good academics to your kids Close Quote

Open Quote Sorry, but the school needs to focus a lot more on their academics, and studies. Also, they should equally balance the enrollment of different races, to get e better understanding of cultural diversity. Do i have a say on this? Of course, because I went to briargrove for elementary, and I learned nearly squatch. When middle school comes around, some of those lil' briargrovers will be wishing they didn't exist.
My main point is: better academics, and no indulging of children(yes there were a lot of annoying spoiled people when I went there. So if I could nice a school that briargrove should follow, it would be T H Rogers. Also, I demand that briargrove have a language elective, or a language class, because I think that it will help kids the most as they enter high school, as far as high-school credit. now all of you parents, if your kid goes to briargrove, take care, and make sure they dont get their iphone, or their ps3 or all of their expensive little goodies, and Drill them on some good old math.

Open Quote I love this school. This is the second year my kids have gone here and they always rave about how much fun they have in school. They're always doing some sort of projects that surprises me like growing meal worms and building things from recycled products. They are in the first and third grade so I don't expect these things from them being so young. They have fun and learn so much! When my daughter was in her old school I would ask her what she's learned and it's always... mmmm I don't know. Now they can't wait to tell me about the things they work on in school!

The teachers are fantastic. You can tell because when I talk to them they'll have a twinkle in their eye and reference the kids as their babies.

Though it's a public school I sincerely feel like it's a private school setting. They try to raise a lot of money and recycle to make money for the school so the kids can do these special projects which I'm fine with donating! There are a lot of parents who are involved as well so it shows good commitment to the kids' education. When you walk through the doors you'll see parents volunteering all of the place which is great!!!

Take a tour of the school and you'll see how happy the children are here. I wish I had the time to volunteer but I'm a single mother; at least I know my kids are cared for here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
