Natha Howell Elementary

Summary:

Natha Howell Elementary is a public elementary school in Fort Worth, Texas, serving around 340 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Fort Worth Independent School District, which has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Natha Howell Elementary stands out for its significantly higher Hispanic student population (around 89%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 60-93% Hispanic students. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of Texas elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger and STAAR test scores that are generally lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects. This is despite the school having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.3 to 15.4 over the past few years. The school also has a very high percentage of students (over 92%) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While some nearby schools, such as Riverside Applied Learning Center and Springdale Elementary, also have relatively low performance, others like David E. Smith Elementary and Idea Achieve Academy perform significantly better on STAAR tests, despite serving similar student demographics. This suggests that there may be opportunities for Natha Howell Elementary to learn from the practices and strategies of higher-performing schools in the area to address the root causes of its consistently low academic performance and wide achievement gaps.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Beyond level school with beyond level teachers. New teachers every year and the good ones never stay. Some teachers yell and scream at kids and others don't let them use the bathroom when they need to use it. Principal is a joke. She never calls back or takes care of problem teachers. Close Quote

Open Quote After this school year I will move just so my children are not forced to go to this awful school. The adminstration is terrible. We were given one days notice about a field trip. The principal is fake. She acts like she cares about the students and parents but never follows through on any of her promises. When observing my child at school I heard the way her teacher talks down to the students and staff. I feel this is the way she normally acts when she thinks no one is watching. She seems uneducated and unprofessional. I have contacted the school several times in regard to bullying on the bus. I have been avoided and ignored all year. I had to pull my children off the bus because the problem was never resolved. As for the classroom, I feel that the constant displine interrupted the learning environment. If you want your children to get a quality education and not get bullied DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN GO TO THIS SCHOOL! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
