Charles A Gill Elementary

Summary:

Charles A Gill Elementary is a public elementary school in Dallas, Texas, serving 587 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Dallas Independent School District, which is ranked 557 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Charles A Gill Elementary faces significant challenges in student academic performance, particularly in reading and mathematics. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools, with proficiency rates on STAAR tests below the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 40% of 3rd graders, 25% of 4th graders, and 40.48% of 5th graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to the district averages of 41.82%, 44.57%, and 49.81%, respectively. The school's performance is also below the district and state in STAAR Mathematics. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students (over 90%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Martha Turner Reilly Elementary, which also serve predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged student populations, generally outperform Charles A Gill Elementary on STAAR assessments. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics and socioeconomic status may be contributing to the academic performance of these schools. Furthermore, Charles A Gill Elementary's performance on STAAR assessments has been relatively stagnant over the past few years, with proficiency rates remaining low and below the district and state averages, indicating the need for more targeted interventions and support at the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote your school, isn't diverse enough, when my son went there(he's white), all the other kids of african american, and hispanic descent, beat him up and bullied him everyday, I feel as though your school should teach about equality, or that everyone is the same, it's not fair that everyone judged my child by the color of his skin, just because he was white, doesn't mean he shouldn't fit in, we no longer live in that area, and my son is no longer enrolled in your school, he now goes to therapy, because your "other" students bullied and picked on him so much, he doesn't even want to be white anymore, he said to me the other day, "i wish i was black, or hispanic, so that way they wouldn't have beat me for being different" if i had to rate your school i would give it a zero and no stars, your school is a terrible environment for any child Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
