Birkes Elementary

Summary:

Birkes Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 1,018 students in grades PK-5. As part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD), Birkes consistently ranks in the top 15% of Texas elementary schools, with exceptional academic performance and a diverse student population.

Birkes Elementary's STAAR test scores significantly outpace the district and state averages, with 77.42% of 3rd graders proficient or better in reading, compared to 57.62% for CFISD and 48.85% for Texas. The school also performs exceptionally well for its African American, Hispanic, economically disadvantaged, and at-risk student populations, ranking in the top 10-15% of Texas elementary schools. This diversity is higher than nearby schools, which tend to have more homogeneous student bodies.

Birkes Elementary's success can be attributed to its efficient resource allocation, with a lower student-to-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending than the district average. This suggests the school has implemented effective strategies and programs to address the needs of its diverse learners and promote equitable outcomes. While nearby schools in CFISD generally perform well, Rennell Elementary, Harmony Science Academy - Cypress, and other local schools often fall short of Birkes' exceptional academic achievements and student subgroup performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Extremely pleased with the education my child has received. We’ve been in 2 different elementary schools in CFISD the level of professionalism at Birkes far succeeds where we were before. I’m highly impressed with the administration and staff.
We were at Lamkin and the administration was subpar. The well being of our child was never a priority, and our concerns were never addressed in a timely manner. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has mild autism. While she has only spent one year here so far, I have seen a dramatic improvement with her. Also, while this school may have over 1300 students, it never felt like my daughter was "lost" in the crowd. She might as well been in a school of a 100 students, it felt like teachers and staff knew who she was and always had the time. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
