Summary:

Coldspring-Oakhurst High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Coldspring, Texas, with a student population of 496. The school is part of the Coldspring-Oakhurst Consolidated Independent School District, which is ranked 844 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Coldspring-Oakhurst High School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of White students (65.93%) compared to nearby schools like Cleveland High School, which has 86.92% Hispanic students, and Shepherd High School, which has 48.09% White students. Academically, the school consistently ranks in the bottom half of Texas high schools, with proficiency rates on STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) exams ranging from 19% to 68% across different subjects and years, below the state average. However, the school has maintained a relatively high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 89.6% to 92.9% over the past few years.

Coldspring-Oakhurst High School also serves a significant population of students from low-income families, with 55.04% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. This is in contrast to nearby schools like Livingston High School and Onalaska Junior/Senior High, which have higher academic performance on STAAR EOC exams. These factors suggest that Coldspring-Oakhurst High School faces challenges in providing a high-quality education to its diverse student population, and may benefit from targeted interventions and support to improve educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote While school administrators set perched high and mighty this evening (2/2/15) before an assembly of community members, students, parents, and other stakeholders, patting themselves on the backs for supposed improved standardized test scores, student college and workforce preparedness, campus culture, and so forth, all I can do is think of my students, 90%+ of whom are ill-prepared to function in even the most menial of environments. It's not that they're bad people - most of them are quite the opposite - but they have never been expected to perform academically, or behave in manners expected of civilized individuals. So for the powers-that-be to pronounce with straight faces that this district is anything other than horribly and/or irreparably broken is dishonest, shameful, and otherwise disingenuous. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
