Horizon High School

Summary:

Horizon High School is a public high school located in El Paso, Texas, serving 1,677 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Clint Independent School District, which is ranked 614 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite serving a predominantly Hispanic student population, Horizon High School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas high schools, with a statewide ranking between 1,196 and 1,526 over the past 10 years and a SchoolDigger rating of 1 or 2 stars out of 5, indicating below-average academic performance. The school's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated between 85.2% and 89.5% over the past 5 years, slightly below the state average, and its STAAR EOC test scores are consistently lower than the state and district averages across all subject areas. With 84.56% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Horizon High School has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, which may contribute to its academic challenges.

Comparing Horizon High School to nearby schools, it becomes clear that the school is underperforming compared to its peers. For example, Clint Independent School District (ISD) Early College Academy has consistently ranked in the top 100 high schools in Texas and maintains a 100% graduation rate, while schools like Del Valle High School, Americas High School, and Pebble Hills High School also outperform Horizon High School on various academic metrics. However, Horizon High School has performed exceptionally well in the "Migrant Students" subgroup, ranking in the top 15-28 high schools in Texas for this category in recent years, suggesting the school may have effective programs or support systems in place for its migrant student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Honestly one of the worst high schools in the Clint district. The school doesn't really care about it's kids, all they care about is getting money for attendance. Hardly have any electives at this school. And don't even get me started with the sexist dress code. I recommend that you don't send your child here. Close Quote

Open Quote I have attended this school for one year already and by far I am embarrassed to say I might graduate from this school. I loathe the staff and teachers at this school who don't give it their all to educate the minds of this generation. I honestly believe that the staff and teachers don't even wanna try to motivate their students to excel in life. I believe that they have lost hope. One of the main reasons we are ranked so low is because the school's main priority is honestly dress code yes as shocking as this may sound it's no joke security would rather have a kid with facial hair in sac than in the class room learning. As sad as this may sound these are the rules of the district. I seriously don't know what is going on in the minds of these people running the district. If they see that this school is ranked at one of the lowest in the state don't you think it's time to stop worrying about how the kids look and start worrying about their education because they sure are not going to be learning very well from sac. I believe that if you give these Kids a little way to express them selves with crazy hair or facial hair the kids wouldn't feel like they are going to a reform school because I honestly feel like I am going to prison on my ride to school. I have no motivation to go to school anymore and my peers feel the exact same way. Hey eastlake you've been open for a few years and you are way better than us oh wait they can wear their hair how ever they want maybe that's what this school needs a LITTLE bit of privilege to encourage creativity and individuality. But hey one person can't make a difference that is what this school taught me and by judging by my grammar they didn't teach English very well either. I would rather be home schooled because this school is the worst!!! I hope someone important reads this seriously!!! Sincerely B.L Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
