Brownfield High School

Summary:

Brownfield High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Brownfield, Texas, with a student population of 443. The school is part of the Brownfield Independent School District, which is ranked 897 out of 968 school districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Brownfield High School faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quarter of Texas high schools over the past decade and maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance varies greatly across different student subgroups, with African American students performing relatively well, but Hispanic, White, English Language Learners, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students all performing below average. Despite high graduation rates and low dropout rates, the school's academic proficiency rates on STAAR End-of-Course exams are significantly below the state average in all subject areas.

Interestingly, another high school in the same district, Brownfield Education Center, performs even worse than Brownfield High School, ranking near the bottom of all Texas high schools. The high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch at Brownfield High School, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage, likely contributes to the school's overall academic underperformance. While the school spends more per student than the state average, the district and school leadership should focus on implementing targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of their diverse student population and improve academic proficiency in core subject areas.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a recent graduate of Brownfield High School and unfortunately I did not receive a proper education. There were few teachers who did care about educating students; however, a majority did not. I had male teacher who preferred his athletes over the rest of the class. I would work hard and turn in all my work but still received lower grades than his athletes. When I confronted him about the situation he would make up excuses such as "Oh, well you didn't turn this in." or "You're missing this paper for my class." None of his statements made any sense since we rarely ever did work in his class. All we ever did was watch movies/videos on youtube or just sit there doing nothing while he sat behind his computer doing nonsense. My B in his class (which should have been a A+) affected my ranking in the top ten percent. Also, many of the teachers cannot control their classrooms. They get lost in irrelevant chatter or give the class a narration of their life stories, turning the learning room into a soap opera episode. I took an anatomy and physiology class last year expecting and desiring to learn so much; however, as always, I learned nothing. The teacher was always gone and never left us any work to do; and when she was in class she was just so disorganized. She was a good teacher, but just got very distracted and off track. For those four years I attended BHS, I don't recall learning anything in any class except for my english and physics class. Props to you Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Burris! Besides those two teachers, no one is really worth a crap at BHS. I do not recommend anyone to attend this school as it will affect your child's education. I am currently a college freshman pursuing a degree in biology. It is difficult to learn things in college that I never received the basics for. I am disappointed to say that my high school years were kind of a waste at BHS. DO NOT ATTEND THIS SCHOOL!

Sincerely,
Struggling College Freshman Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
