Lakewood Elementary

Summary:

Lakewood Elementary is a public elementary school in Belton, Texas, serving around 700 students in grades K-5. It is part of the Belton Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 463 out of 968 school districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lakewood Elementary consistently outperforms the Belton ISD and the state of Texas in STAAR test scores across all grade levels and subjects. In the 2023-2024 school year, Lakewood had over 60% of students proficient or better in STAAR Reading and Mathematics, compared to less than 55% for the Belton ISD. The school has also maintained a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is among the top-performing schools in the state. However, Lakewood has a predominantly white student population, with a lower percentage of Hispanic and African American students compared to nearby schools like Leon Heights Elementary, Sparta Elementary, and Joe M Pirtle Elementary. Additionally, Lakewood has a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting it serves a more affluent population than the surrounding schools in the Belton ISD.

While Lakewood Elementary's academic performance is impressive, the school's demographic profile and the comparisons to nearby schools highlight the need for the Belton ISD to address potential equity and access issues. The district should consider strategies that promote greater socioeconomic and racial diversity, as well as ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students within the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Ridiculous that this school does not have a proper gym with air conditioning. They spend all their money on IPADS and technology when other areas are lacking. Despite that this is still an above average elementary school Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
