Casey Elementary

Summary:

Casey Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving around 500 students in grades PK-5. The school has a diverse student population, with a majority Hispanic enrollment and significant White and African American populations.

Academically, Casey Elementary's performance on STAAR tests is generally below the district and state averages, though the school shows some strengths in 4th and 5th grade reading. However, the school struggles in Math and Science, with proficiency rates often 10-20 percentage points behind the district and state. Student subgroups also perform unevenly, with White students consistently outperforming their Hispanic and African American peers. The school's Gifted and Talented program is also an area of concern, ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools.

Compared to nearby schools, Baranoff Elementary in the Austin Independent School District consistently outperforms Casey Elementary, while schools like Odom Elementary have similar or lower academic performance. Despite increased per-student spending at Casey Elementary in recent years, the school's academic outcomes have remained relatively stagnant, suggesting a need for targeted interventions and support to improve student learning and achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is our second year at Casey Elementary. My daughter attends 1st grade and we have had a good experience with the school. The teachers are dedicated, good listeners, responsive and in my experience, very reasonable. It's obvious they care. The Assistant Principal is wonderful and very approachable.

The only problem the school suffers from is not enough community support. It is a Title 1 school, and the parents simply don't have as many resources as say, the parents at Cowan or Zilker. We need parental support. We need children from a variety of backgrounds at the school. If we could get that, we could all support each other and this school would be truly great. My husband and I could both afford a private school for our kids if we had to, but we really believe that the neighborhood school deserves our support. And it's been a very good experience for us. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
