Bedichek Middle

Summary:

Bedichek Middle is a public middle school in Austin, Texas, serving 675 students in grades 6-8, with a majority Hispanic student population (84.44%). The school is part of the Austin Independent School District, which is ranked 554 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bedichek Middle consistently underperforms compared to district and state averages on STAAR tests, with proficiency rates ranging from just 1.21% to 30.9% in 2023-2024, far below the 23.33% to 54.45% for the district and state. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 10% of Texas middle schools for Asian, African American, and Gifted and Talented students in reading and math. Bedichek Middle also has higher dropout rates than the district and state averages, and a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds (87.26% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch).

Compared to nearby schools like Hill Country Middle and Small Middle, which are ranked in the top 20% and 5% of Texas middle schools respectively, Bedichek Middle's academic performance is significantly lower. Despite its relatively high per-student spending ($13,401 in 2020-2021), the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Texas middle schools, suggesting that the issue may not be solely a lack of resources, but rather the effective allocation and utilization of those resources to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went there for only a few weeks and I was begging my mom to take me out. Then she put me in a different school(thank goodness). My experience was not very good but yours may be, so don't take this as it is an awful school for everybody. Close Quote

Open Quote I went to Bedichek for 3 years, like I had to. One thing, first off: The administration is terrible. Most of the Teachers were nice, but they all had to follow very strict and ridiculous rules, like the students. The uniform they have is depressing, there isn't any color or variance to brighten up the school. Any trace of red or blue on your clothes, and they'll send you home for the day. They seriously will make you miss a day because you wore pants with blue stitching or because your shoes have red lining on the inside. They'll even do that if you're wearing PURPLE. Nowhere in their uniform list says that you can't wear purple. They made me go a day with no shoelaces in my shoes because the laces were purple. The only good thing about this school is the band department. The band directors are very nice and forgiving, and the band is excellent. The same can't be said for the academics though. Most of the students are vicious and will verbally and sometimes physically attack anyone that's different from them.

Don't let your child suffer through this hell-hole for three years. If at all possible, get them to go to Fulmore, Kealing, or any school that is NOT Bedichek. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
