Andrews Elementary

Summary:

Andrews Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving 343 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Austin Independent School District, which is ranked 554 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Andrews Elementary faces significant challenges in improving the academic performance of its predominantly Hispanic (78.72%) and economically disadvantaged (96.21%) student population. The school consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with its students performing significantly below district and state averages on STAAR tests, particularly for Asian, Hispanic, and English Language Learner (ELL) subgroups. Despite spending more per student ($15,077 in 2020-2021) than nearby schools like Harris Elementary, Winn Montessori, and Blanton Elementary, Andrews Elementary's academic outcomes remain consistently low.

The school's high student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.9 to 18.0 students per teacher, is also higher than the nearby schools, which have ratios ranging from 9.3 to 16.3 students per teacher. Additionally, the nearby charter schools, such as Austin Achieve Pflugerville and KIPP Austin Comunidad, outperform Andrews Elementary on STAAR tests, despite serving similar student populations. These findings suggest that Andrews Elementary may need to review its instructional practices, resource allocation, and strategies to better support its unique student population and improve academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter attended Andrews for one year before we moved to a different school district. We were happy with my daughter's teacher. She had decades of teaching experience and was passionate about her job. I was also very pleased with the school's administrators. I felt like the principal really valued my opinion as a parent.

We were disappointed in communication and parent involvement. A lot of times we didn't find out about school events until the day before, which was a little frustrating. Only 2-3 parents attended PTA meetings, which I found surprising and concerning, since there is often a direct correlation between parent involvement and student achievement.

The student body is overwhelmingly low income, with a high percentage of English language learners. This affects test scores. However, I appreciate that the principal places an emphasis on fostering bilingualism for the students who are native Spanish speakers. In the long run, this is probably in the best interest of the students--even if it means lower test scores in the short term. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
