Nichols J H

Summary:

Nichols J H is a public middle school in Arlington, Texas, serving 692 students in grades 7-8. The school is part of the Arlington Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 683 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Nichols J H faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom half of Texas middle schools and performing well below district and state averages on STAAR tests. The school's performance is particularly low for African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner (ELL) students, with the school ranking in the bottom 25% of Texas middle schools for these subgroups. Additionally, Nichols J H has experienced relatively high dropout rates in recent years, ranging from 1.2% to 6.0%. The school has a very high percentage of students (over 83%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Nearby schools within the Arlington ISD, such as Bailey J H and Shackelford J H, generally perform better than Nichols J H on academic measures, with higher STAAR proficiency rates and better statewide rankings. Schools in the neighboring Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, such as Central J H and Euless J H, significantly outperform Nichols J H, with much higher STAAR proficiency rates and statewide rankings. Despite spending more per student than some of these higher-performing schools, Nichols J H's additional funding does not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote this school is undisciplined and the students are disobedient, very disobedient. Well the majority at least. This school needs to have a better handle on things! there are fights 1-3 times a week! And everyone wants to get involved. It seems as the teachers have no control over the students, therefore the students think that they may do whatever it is they want. I have almost had ENOUGH of being around of a bunch of unruly, immature, disrespectful children! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
