Summary:

Shotwell Middle is a public magnet middle school in Houston, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,078 students. The school is part of the Aldine Independent School District, which is ranked 790 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Shotwell Middle has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (around 75%) compared to the state average and nearby schools like Stovall Middle and Garcia Middle. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas middle schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its STAAR test scores are significantly below the state and district averages across all subjects and grade levels, particularly for its African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students.

Shotwell Middle's performance is consistently lower than other middle schools in the Aldine ISD, as well as schools in the neighboring Spring ISD and Klein ISD. The school also has a higher dropout rate (0.9-1.3%) compared to the state average and a very high percentage of students (over 90%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Despite these challenges, Shotwell Middle's performance has remained stagnant or declined over the past several years, with no clear signs of improvement in its state rankings or test scores.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS SCHOOL SINCE MY KIDS STARTED IN 2010. ALMOST THE WHOLE STAFF IS UNPROFESSIONAL. THEY PURNISH KIDS FOR EVERY LITTLE THING. THEY ACT LIKE THEY DON'T WANT THE KIDS TO HAVE A GOOD EDUCATION. THE TEACHERS IS RUDED AND CURSE AT THE KIDS. IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS HELP WITH SCHOOL WORK AND ASK THE TEACHERS FOR HELP, THE TEACHERS GET AN ATTITUDE. I NEVER EXPERIENCE THIS BEFORE AND REGRET EVER SENDING MY KIDS THERE. I WAS TOLD THAT I CAN'T TAKE MY KIDS OUT BECAUSE I LIVE IN THE SCHOOL ZONE AND THIS IS THEIR NEW LAW. NOW THEY DO HAVE VERY LITTLE TEACHERS THERE WHO CARE ABOUT THE KIDS EDUCATIONS BUT THEY ALL SCARE TO SAY SOMETHING BECAUSE THEY MIGHT LOSE THEIR JOB. NOW I'M FORCE TO GIVE UP MY HOUSE AND MOVE SOMEWHERE MY KIDS CAN HAVE A GREAT EDUCATION. I HOPE THAT THEY GET A NEW PRINCIPLE AND GET RID OF THE TEACHERS WHO DON'T CARE ABOUT THE KIDS EDUCATION AND JUST THERE FOR A CHECK. PURNISHING KIDS FOR EVERYTHING THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT INSTEAD OF FINDING A SOLULATIONS TO HELP THEM IS NOT RIGHT. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
