Gateway College Preparatory School

Summary:

Gateway College Preparatory School is a public charter school serving grades K-12 in Georgetown, Texas, part of the Texas College Preparatory Academies district. With a diverse student population, the school has consistently outperformed state and local averages, maintaining a 100% four-year graduation rate and extremely low dropout rates.

Gateway College Preparatory School's academic excellence is evident across multiple metrics. On the STAAR assessments, the school's proficiency rates in reading, math, science, and end-of-course exams significantly outshine the state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Gateway's 3rd-8th grade reading proficiency rates are projected to range from 65.22% to 86.11%, compared to 48.85% to 54.09% for Texas. In math, the school's 3rd-8th grade proficiency rates are 51.3% to 75.63%, compared to 40.86% to 48.96% for the state. When compared to nearby schools like Rosedale and Granger School, Gateway College Preparatory consistently outperforms on these key assessments.

The school's exceptional performance may be attributed to factors such as its charter school status, experienced teaching staff, and focus on college-preparatory curriculum. Additionally, the low percentage of economically disadvantaged students (5.15% in 2021-2022) may contribute to the school's high academic achievement. Gateway College Preparatory School's success provides a valuable educational option for families in the Georgetown area, potentially attracting more families to the community and enhancing the overall academic achievement of the region.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I've thought about providing a rating for some time but wanted the opportunity to reflect on it a bit before writing. I had two kids at Gateway for 9 years with one graduating and one choosing to return to public schools for high school. Both my wife and I were very involved with the school and I think I can provide a real outlook based on our experiences with Gateway.
I'll start with the positive. The current head of schools, Mr. Boorman does an excellent job of communicating with parents and truly cares about the school and its students. I've never had a negative interaction with him. As you would expect, there are very good teachers and coaches along with some that need improvement.
I was personally very disappointed with the high school principal. He was well aware of multiple issues with certain teachers who did not follow school policies and it did not appear that there was any action at all taken by him to correct this. Moreover, he was just not a good leader of teachers and students based on my own interactions with him as well as being witness to other incidents. It was clear to us that he did not know how to evaluate or discipline either the teaching staff or students.
In addition, the turnover amongst teachers, coaches, and staff is high considering the size of the school. We saw an excellent counselor along with a good teachers leave for a number of reasons such as pay, lack of effective leadership, and better opportunities.
Lastly, the school's district, Orenda Education, really needs to do a better job in a number of different areas. First, the fundraising head does a pretty poor job with outreach and really is rarely seen on campus. Fundraising should be a foundational concept at a charter school and the current fundraising head lacks experience needed to increase the efforts. Second, the communication from Orenda is poor at best. There needs to be immediate improvement in how the district communicates with the school and vice versa. The vision coming from Orenda when we started with Gateway is really not what was delivered beyond just the buildings themselves. Now I do believe that parent involvement is needed to make that vision a reality but I think that both Orenda and Gateway bear some responsibility for any lack of parent involvement.
So to summarize, while I do not regret sending my kids to Gateway, I do see a need for improvement in all areas and significant improvement in some areas that I felt were subpar. Close Quote

Open Quote Not sure where those negative reviews are coming from. Must have had some troubled kids and just blamed the school.... which is great by the way, particularly when compared to other GISD schools. I've witnessed only positives from teachers and admin. I'll be sending all three of my kids to this school. Close Quote

Open Quote No polices are consistent. Teacher turn over rate is through the roof. My son had a new music teacher every year. His kindergarten teacher left, his first grade teacher left, his second grade teacher left, and so on. But it is no wonder that they leave when they can't take that place any longer. My son was spit on and the teacher told the principal. She didn't give the spitter any consequences. I email her to discuss my concerns and no reply. Close Quote

Open Quote Huge disappointment. Save yourself the torture and avoid this school. Classes are not very challenging. Teachers and admin don't seem to care about kids. Lots of yelling. We want our kids treated with respect and challenged in school. Neither will happen at Gateway. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
