Westchase Neighborhood School

Summary:

Westchase Neighborhood School is a public charter elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Houston, Texas, with a diverse student population of over 1,000 students. Located in a high-need area, the school is part of the Houston Independent School District and has shown both strengths and areas for improvement in its academic performance.

One of Westchase Neighborhood School's key strengths is its strong performance among African American and Hispanic students, who make up the majority of the student body. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school ranked 230 out of 2,443 Texas elementary schools for its African American students and 1,146 out of 4,401 for its Hispanic students, both earning 4 or 5 stars from SchoolDigger. This suggests the school is effectively serving these historically underperforming populations. However, the school struggles with its female and English Language Learner (ELL) subgroups, ranking 2,424 out of 4,561 Texas elementary schools for its female students and 2,747 out of 3,487 for its ELL students in 2021-2022.

Westchase Neighborhood School's overall academic performance has been inconsistent, with its statewide ranking ranging from 1,235 to 2,391 out of 4,647 to 4,578 Texas elementary schools over the past few years. While the school generally outperforms nearby Alief Independent School District and Houston Independent School District schools in terms of student proficiency, it still lags behind the state averages in many subject areas, particularly in 8th grade Math where 0% of students were proficient. This suggests the school has room for improvement in ensuring all students, regardless of background, are achieving academic success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son is in kindergarten and they have been amazing working with him. His teacher has worked extremely hard at getting him to stay focused and learn with his ADHD and behavior issues it isn’t a easy task but she comes up with creative ideas to make him interested in learning and he has come so far this past year. I’m extremely thankful that we found this school. Ms Sanchez and all the staff their really are teaching from the heart. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
