Jean Massieu Academy

Summary:

Jean Massieu Academy is an alternative public charter school in Arlington, Texas that serves 181 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, with a predominantly Hispanic student population.

The school stands out for its impressive academic achievements, including a 100% four-year graduation rate and a 0% dropout rate, which are significantly better than state averages. However, Jean Massieu Academy's test scores on the STAAR assessments tend to lag behind those of higher-performing nearby charter schools, such as Universal Academy and Treetops School International. This may be due in part to the school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (77.9%) and its relatively lower per-student spending levels compared to some nearby charter schools, such as Trinity Charter Schools - Fort Worth Campus.

Despite these challenges, Jean Massieu Academy's focus on supporting its students' academic and personal growth is evident in its strong graduation and retention rates. The school also has a lower student-teacher ratio than many nearby charter schools, which may contribute to its ability to provide more individualized attention to students. Overall, Jean Massieu Academy appears to be a school that is dedicated to helping its students succeed, even in the face of significant economic and academic obstacles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote In the past ASL was strong impacted to use in JMA. All teachers could communicate in ASL but not anymore. Right now it is open in public and more students enroll that does not have any knowledge in sign language. More teachers work there and they do not sign well either. JMA used to focus on deaf or coda children with teacher that speaks sign language. Tragic how things changed so much!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
