Horizon Montessori II - Stem Academy

Summary:

Horizon Montessori II - Stem Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Weslaco, Texas, with a student population of 345. The school is part of the Weslaco Independent School District (Isd), which is ranked 436 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its small student-teacher ratio and higher-than-average spending per student, Horizon Montessori II - Stem Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools in recent years, with its performance on STAAR assessments significantly below the state and district averages across grade levels and subject areas. Certain student subgroups, such as female students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, perform particularly poorly compared to their peers statewide. Interestingly, the nearby public schools, such as Idea Weslaco Pike Academy, North Bridge Elementary, and Raul A Gonzalez Junior Elementary, which have higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students, still outperform Horizon Montessori II - Stem Academy.

The school's high percentage of Hispanic students (over 96%) and economically disadvantaged students (over 70%) does not fully explain its academic struggles, as the nearby public schools with similar demographics are outperforming Horizon Montessori II - Stem Academy. The school's impressive 0% dropout rate is a positive, but it does not offset the concerns around its academic performance. Overall, the data suggests that Horizon Montessori II - Stem Academy faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students, and the school's leadership and the Weslaco Independent School District (Isd) may need to closely examine the factors contributing to the school's underperformance and implement targeted interventions to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have three girls there and I think the smaller class rooms and more attention the kids get is good. I have been sending them there for several years and can tell you from having met most of the staff that they do care and will take the extra time with your child. This does not mean you get to be a lazy parent. I believe children will only excell when the parent is involved with home work, study, and praise. I know too that this school does take bullying seriously so if your kid is a little shy or just has trouble socially the students seem kinder there. The other parents seem involved too. It is not all about test scores. If all your school is teaching is just for those test, then they are not giving the kids as much as they need. The only reason I did not give a five is because the education does not compete with high dollar private, but for those that need free this is good. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
