Science Hall Elementary

Summary:

Science Hall Elementary is a public elementary school in Kyle, Texas, serving 591 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.

While Science Hall Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (84.26%) compared to the state average, it consistently underperforms on STAAR tests across all grade levels and subjects, with 3rd grade reading proficiency at 39.53% compared to the district's 52.26% and the state's 48.85%. The school's rankings for various student subgroups, such as Hispanic, English Language Learners, and Low Socioeconomic Status students, are consistently in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, indicating significant achievement gaps. Over the past 10 years, Science Hall Elementary has been ranked in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

In contrast, some nearby schools within the same district, such as Laura B Negley Elementary and Kyle Elementary, are performing significantly better on STAAR tests and have higher SchoolDigger rankings. While Science Hall Elementary's per-student spending has increased over the past three years, from $9,036 in 2018-2019 to $11,039 in 2020-2021, this increased funding does not appear to have translated into improved academic outcomes, suggesting the need for the school to re-evaluate its resource allocation and instructional strategies.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Horrible experience with this school. After 3 years of no issues my children were being harassed by the attendance clerk at SHES. We moved to Austin and had just moved to Austin and decided to keep our children enrolled at SHES to finish at least the semester since we are still paying taxes on our home in the Hays district. The attendance lady has been harassing my children since my daughter told her we moved as to where she lives which is just creepy and wrong. We advised the principal of the situation and he did nothing. Do not enroll your children here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
