Hillsboro High

Summary:

Hillsboro High is a public high school in Nashville, Tennessee, serving 1,227 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Davidson County school district, which is ranked 122 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hillsboro High faces several challenges, including declining academic performance, significant achievement gaps between racial/ethnic groups, and struggles to support its more disadvantaged students. The school's proficiency rates in core subjects like Biology I, US History, and English are generally lower than the state and county averages, and its rankings vary significantly by student subgroup. While the school performs relatively well for White students, it ranks much lower for African American and low socioeconomic status students. Compared to nearby schools like Early College High School, Hillsboro High has significantly lower proficiency rates in these subjects.

Despite an increase in spending per student over the years, Hillsboro High's statewide ranking has declined, from 215th out of 273 Tennessee high schools in 2016-2017 to 235th out of 374 in 2023-2024. The school's leadership and the district should closely examine these issues and develop targeted strategies to improve student outcomes and ensure equitable access to quality education for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote School is not safe for the children with a lot of drug use and bad influences. School offers no intervention or help to students who may be in need. The only thing they do is expel them and send them to alternative school so they don't have to deal with it. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
