Howard Connect Academy

Summary:

Howard Connect Academy is a public middle school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, serving 253 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Hamilton County School District, which is ranked 79 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Howard Connect Academy faces significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 20% of Tennessee middle schools with a 1-star rating. The school has a much higher percentage of African American (64.03%) and Hispanic (25.69%) students compared to surrounding schools, and its academic performance is well below the county and state averages across all subjects and grade levels. Specific student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and low-income students, perform particularly poorly, with the school ranking in the bottom 50% or 20% of Tennessee middle schools for these groups. Despite a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher spending per student, Howard Connect Academy has struggled to improve student outcomes.

The challenges facing Howard Connect Academy appear to be systemic within the Hamilton County School District, as most of the nearby middle schools, such as Hunter Middle School, Brown Middle School, and Hixson Middle School, also rank in the bottom 50% of Tennessee middle schools. Addressing the persistent achievement gaps at Howard Connect Academy will likely require a comprehensive, district-wide approach to support the school's predominantly African American, Hispanic, and low-income student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
